Department’s Achievements

  • The Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) was established as a faculty at the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka under the direction of the Ministry of Higher Education by the Gazette Notification dated 26.03.1997 (Gazette No:986/6). In 1998, the direct intake was admitted to the Campus enrolling students from the Commerce and Arts stream of the G.C.E. (A/L) for the academic year 1997/1998 and three-year Bachelor of Accountancy and Finance (BAF), and Management degrees were offered. In 2002, the faculty has started to offer BBM Degree (Four-year degree) with the two specializations: Accountancy and Finance and Management. In 2005, the BBM curriculum was revised for the academic year 2003/2004 and students were given opportunity to follow specialization in Accounting and Finance. Now the Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Accounting and Finance is being revised meeting the minimum requirements of SLQF Level 6 targeting the admission criteria form G.C.E. (A/L) Commerce stream students.
  • The Department of Finance and Accountancy remarkably, introduced a new degree program titled in 2023. The degree program of Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Banking and Insurance is a Four (04) degree in line with the SLQF Level 06. The very first batch of the undergraduates for the degree program of Bachelor of Business Management Honours in Banking and Insurance was admitted to the university in July, 2023. Having a department structure would offer the staff and students a better academic environment and closer collaboration with other academic and professional organizations in the country and abroad to enhance their knowledge in banking and insurance. Creating a new department of banking and insurance will signal the department’s commitment to the field of study, to alumni and internship partners. In turn it will help to promote student’s skills and career networks which are leading to produce quality graduates required for the development of our country. Now the department has submitted the proposal to establish a new department names Department of Banking and Insurance.
  • The department has signed Memorandum of Understandings with the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Sri Lanka and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
