Biography
Prof. Dr Suresh Surendran is an accomplished academic and experienced Civil and Environmental Engineer and recognised Env. Risk & Sustainable Development Scientist with an established record of leading, developing and
delivering research, enterprise, teaching, training & scholarly activities. Over 41 years he a variety of roles as
Professor, Senior Lecturer, Senior Engineer, Principal Scientist in water-related risk and sustainable development and
Registered Programme and Project Manager (practitioner). He has proven 41 years of academic and professional
experience by working for Universities, Government Regulators, Operating Authorities, Environmental & International
Development Agencies, and consultants & contractors.
He holds a PhD in Water/Civil Engineering, an MSc in Water Pollution Control, a PgDip in Community Water Supply &
Sanitation, and BSc in Environmental Science & Technology and Civil Engineering. He is a registered practitioner for
Programme/Project management, professional risk analyst, scenario modeller, demand manager, strategy planner,
collaborator/coordinator, and a trained team leader able to make appropriate decisions, support, direct and reform.
He has developed, led & managed R&D Theme, within the Joint Dep of Env. (DEFRA) and Environment Agency R&D
programme; applied, secured, and managed £18m direct & £20m partnership funding and 71 R&D projects in 8 years.
For universities, he led, & coordinated Partners from over 15 EU countries, and developed proposals for 3 EU Horizon
2020 (£20m) and ERASMUS calls. He has published 85 papers in peer-reviewed journals and refereed conferences, 20
research reports
He is a self-motivated, ambitious, dynamic, and creative person and has the proven ability to knowledge-technology
transfer & capability development across boundaries, with multidisciplinary, multicultural groups on complex topics.
He is known for taking a long-term scientific view and can develop and implement comprehensive sustainable risk-
based system designs by using top-down ideas with bottom-up evidence to “proof of concept” & deliver strategic or
operational research. He has a reputation for resolving problems and facilitating changes to benefit all in an open,
pragmatic, outcome-oriented way.
