SILVER JUBILEE AND RCBS 2022

The Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka celebrated its 4th Research Conference on Business Studies (RCBS) – 2022 and Silver Jubilee Celebrations of 25 years of excellence from 1997 to 2022 on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of July, 2022 through hybrid mode both physically and virtually.

Silver Jubilee events commenced with cultural rituals. The traditional oil lamp was lit by the honourable guests and then the National Anthem and Tamil Thai Vazhthu were sung. Later, the Marketing Student Club launched the Faculty Video. It consists of notable milestones in this faculty’s 25-year journey from past to present. Dr Y.Nanthagopan, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, delivered the welcome address. He spoke about many of the faculty’s history, achievements, success and activities and also, highlighted the strongest parts of the faculty. After the welcome speech, the Project Management Club performed a welcome dance in the Sinhalese and Tamil traditions.

Professor A. Pushpanthan had read the message from the guest of honor, Mr. R. Nanthakumaran, former Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies in his absence.  After that, the dean and special guest, Dr. T. Mangaleshwaran, along with all the department heads, cut the Silver Jubilee cake. Followed by, Guest of Honour Ms. R. Vijayalan, Senior Assistant Director, CBSL delivered the address to the gatherings.

The Silver Jubilee Commemorative Book (Souvenir) was launched by the Mrs P.Sarmatha, The Chief Editor. The first book was handed to the Dr T.Mangaleswaran, Vice-Chancellor. The book consists of the faculty’s history, great achievements, success and significant milestones in the twenty-five years of establishment of the faculty in 1997.

The Guest of honor, Ms. K. Asokumar, Kobithan Garments then addressed and shared her thoughts on the new work underway at the university and the signing of the MOU with external stakeholders. Following, the RCBS-2022 conference proceedings were launched by A.Pushpanthan, Chief Editor of the Editorial Committee.

Next, the HR Club launched the Job Bank website and briefed on the importance of the Job Bank and its functionalities. Then, on this occasion, magazines of the Project Management club, Marketing club, Economics Club, the Human Resources club and the Accounting and Finance club were launched. It was a great achievement on the part of the faculty because the students of the faculty launched student club magazines.

Next, the gathering was addressed by the Special Guest Dr. T. Mangaleshwaran, the Vice-chancellor of, the University of Vavuniya. Then, PRANA Financial Aid was launched by Faculty Alumni to partially support the students to carry out their educational activities. Followed by Chief Guest, Prof S.P.P. Amaratunge, Chairman, University Grants Commission. He highly appreciated the faculty for holding this event with a greater number of participants despite the crisis situation in the country.

Next, the event was to honor former deans, staff members who have completed 25 years of service, and retired staff, and silver jubilee awards were given for excellence in faculty research for academic staff. and the best research awards for students in each discipline and Best Entrepreneur in the Wanni region. Followed by the certificates awarded to the staff members who have participated in and won the faculty-level sports events.

After the award ceremony, the vice-chancellor, together with the dean, the guest of honour, the heads of departments, the senior treasurers of the student clubs, inaugurated the nature and herbal park of the faculty created by the project management student club.

Following is a keynote speech by Dr. Nigel Williams, University of Portsmouth, UK. In the title of Responsible Project Management. Followed by a panel discussion was held under the theme of “Business Readiness for the Pandemic; A time for a paradigm shift”, The panel discussion was moderated by Professor H.M.A. Herath, University of Vavuniya. For this session, Mr. Dammika Mendis, Executive Vice President, PMI Sri Lanka Chapter, Mr. Samantha Rathnayake, Senior Management Consultant, CIPM, Mr. M. R. A. Perera, Council Member, CMA, Mr. Nuwan Gamage, President, SLIM and Mr. C. P. A. Karunathilake, Director General, IBSL participated as speakers in the panel discussion. It was a fruitful discussion under a great theme during this economic crisis that the country is experiencing. And also received generous ideas from honourable speakers and new ways of thinking and getting out of these situations. Finally, at the end of the first day, the Welcome address was made by the Mr C.Laroyan, Convener, Silver Jubilee 2022.

on the second day of the event, Tuesday, July 5, 2022. Mr.S.A Jude Leon, Convener, RCBS 2022 delivered the welcome address followed by a keynote address by Professor Malcolm Cooper, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan . And also, the third keynote speech by Professor Ravi Shankar Indian Institute of Technology, India. Finally, a vote of thanks was made by Mrs P.Danoshana, Secretary – RCBS -2022.

The Technical Sessions began after the keynote speeches at 11:00. Five technical sessions were held in parallel on five tracks, namely Accounting and Finance, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Tourism, Economics and Business Communication, and Project Management and Information System. In total, 43 papers were presented at the conference and awards were provided to the best presenters in each track.

Track 04: Marketing, Tourism, Economics and Business Communication: Prof S.Sivesan, Prof. S. Santhirasekaram and Dr. K. Shriganeshan

Track 05: Project Management and Information system Prof Ranjith Wijewardana and Dr. S.S. Sivakumar

In the evening, at 7:00 p.m., the students and faculty staff organized cultural programs. Various dance programs, music programs and children’s programs were organized and students and staff showed their colours in different traditions. The faculty staff with their families and the executive staff and academic executive staff of the university participated in this cultural program and all ended with a dinner at 10:00 p.m.

A Career Guidance Webinar was organized by the Faculty On Wednesday, 6th of July, 2022, from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon for the commemoration of the Faculty’s 25th anniversary. The targeted participants of this webinar were University students who choose management degrees, School students who choose the Commerce stream for their Advanced Level and school teachers who teach commerce stream subjects in schools.

Five professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), Institute of Certified Management Accountants (CMA), Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) and Project Management Institute (PMI) were invited to conduct the webinar on explaining the respective professional courses available with them and the job opportunities available for the respective discipline in national and international job markets. This webinar was a good initiation for the Faculty of Business Studies. Nearly 300 participants attended the webinar and got benefitted.

Along with these various activities, the Siver Jubilee Celebrations and RCBS 2022 ended up with a big round of applause.
