The Project Management Club of the Department of Project Management, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya, successfully organized the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Training Programme on March 10th, 2025, at SH4 Hall. The session, which commenced at 8:30 AM, was conducted by Mr. K. Romeshun, an Independent Consultant and Team Leader at the Centre for Poverty Analysis, who brings decades of experience in project management, development evaluation, and government planning. The workshop aimed to enhance the monitoring and evaluation skills of third-year project management students, focusing on effective data collection, performance measurement, and impact assessment techniques relevant to real-world project management practices.
\nThroughout the interactive session, participants gained practical knowledge of designing M&E frameworks, establishing measurable performance indicators, and applying systematic approaches to assess project progress and impact. Hands-on exercises allowed students to translate theoretical concepts into actionable tools applicable to future project work. On the 1st of February 2025, the second workshop in the 2025 series was held at the SH3 Hall, targeting final-year students pursuing the BBM Honours in Project Management. The workshop was facilitated by Professor Yogarajah Nanthagopan, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies and a founding member of the Department of Project Management. The purpose of this specialized session was to guide students who were in their internship period in preparing their Group Capstone Projects (GCPs).
\nThe workshop began by introducing the criteria for selecting project titles that align with students\u2019 academic strengths, industry relevance, and originality. Emphasis was placed on avoiding redundancy and ensuring that selected topics offer fresh insights and real-world applicability. The resource person walked students through the step-by-step process of developing impactful GCPs\u2014from identifying practical needs and preparing concept papers to conducting feasibility analysis and finalizing complete project reports. Students were strongly encouraged to actively engage in every stage of the GCP development and to maintain academic discipline throughout their project execution journey. The session concluded at 10:00 AM with an acknowledgment of the students\u2019 commitment to their academic responsibilities and the importance of regular progress presentations to the department during the internship phase<\/p>\n

The first workshop of the year was conducted on the 22nd of January 2025 at the Smart Computer Laboratory (SCL) of the Faculty of Business Studies. The event focused on the practical application of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the context of project management and geospatial data collection. This workshop was conducted in collaboration with Suleco Pvt. Ltd., the Department\u2019s official industry partner since May 2022.
\nResource persons included Mr. Mohammed Nizmi, Head of the Surveying Instrument Division, and Mr. Buddy Abey Suriya, General Manager of Suleco Pvt. Ltd. The workshop included both theoretical explanations and live demonstrations. Topics covered during the session included GNSS fundamentals, satellite constellation overviews, signal processing, and system components. A unique highlight was the discussion on drone technology and its role in modern surveying practices. Despite sudden heavy rainfall, the facilitators successfully adapted the session to an indoor format, ensuring an uninterrupted experience. Participants included 98 third-year PM students, along with the department\u2019s academic staff and two technical lab assistants. A Q&A session followed the demonstrations, encouraging dialogue about real-world GNSS applications, drone surveying, and data analysis. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Thirugnanasampanthar, Senior Treasurer of the PM Club.<\/p>\n

WORKSHOP SERIES 07 Participatory Need Analysis (PNA)<\/h4>\n

The Department of Project Management, Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya has conducted the Participatory Need Analysis (PNA) organized by Northern Development Council (NDC) through the Presidential Secretary, Sri Lanka on March 23rd 2024 aimed to identify and prioritize the needs of rural communities for sustainable livelihood development in selected three villages like Muthumariamman Nagar, Puthur, and Paresankulam Villages, Pulliyankulam Division, Vavuniya District, Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

Resource persons included Prof. Y. Nanthagopan, Mrs. S. Mathivathany, Mr. S. Thirunanasampanthar, and Ms. S. Sharangi, who facilitated comprehensive activities such as resource mapping and problem tree analysis with the presence of Dr. Maharoof Mohamed Rizvi and Eng. Thampha, Board of Directors, NDC.<\/p>\n

Key findings included the identification of critical resources, primary needs, prioritization of village needs, root cause analysis, and generation of potential solutions.<\/p>\n

Project proposals for implementation in the villages encompassed areas such as agricultural development, livelihood skills training, infrastructure development, community initiatives, and education enhancement programs.<\/p>\n

The collaborative effort between community members, project management students, staff members, and NDC stakeholders has laid the foundation for sustainable development initiatives in the target villages.<\/p>\n

Gratitude extended to all participants, resource persons, and stakeholders for their active involvement and contributions to the PNA process.<\/p>\n

The Project Management Club of the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya proudly presented a workshop series 10 on \u201cHow Project Quality Assurance impacts on Operational Excellence: Strategies and Challenges\u201d on 7th February 2024 from 1.00pm to 5.00 pm physically at SH4 Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n

Dr. (Eng.) S.S. Sivakumar, Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna was invited as the Resource Person for the event. Senior Advisor\/ Treasurer Mrs. S. Mathivathany also were invited by Project Management Club for enlighten the event. All the first year, second year and third year Project Management students were actively participated to the workshop. It was hosted by the vice president Miss.Nithya Nantheeswaran.<\/p>\n

Rather than engaging with theoretical knowledge of quality project execution, being corporate with the subjects in practical way through such workshops influence students to think and see over the limited frame. Also, inspired participants to further explore it on their own in any project fields.<\/p>\n

At first the resource person gave a brief idea for the students regarding Quality Assurance with the aid of visual presentations and some ongoing project samples. The student involvement showed a rapid improvement when the resource person provided a group activity that is based Presenting a project proposal to the audience by selecting a suitable project with the help of their group members. The President of the club Master W.G.R.C.Gunarathne presented an appreciation bouquet for the Resource person for his incredible dedication and for sharing his insights with us.<\/p>\n

Finally, The Secretary V.Chandra Kumara gave the vote of thanks of the session. Along with that the Feedback of the session was delivered by the 2nd year committee member Ms.A.F.Fathima Farha. It was a great way to teach hands-on skills as it gives learners an opportunity to try out new methods in project quality management. Students requested to conduct further workshop in future to get practical experiences. Over 100 student\u2019s participation, the workshop series 10 was successfully completed.<\/p>\n

The Project Management Club organized a highly insightful session on “Social Impact Assessment for Projects” on 26th July 2023. The event featured Mr. Thevarajah Krishnarajah, a renowned Community Development and Social Safeguard Expert, Senior Social Officer, and Gender Expert. The session aimed to create awareness about the importance of social impact assessment in project management and its significance in promoting sustainable and socially responsible initiatives.
\nThe event commenced with a warm welcome address by the Project Management Club, expressing gratitude to Mr. Krishnarajah for gracing the occasion as the esteemed resource person. The attendees, comprising students, Dean and PM staff members, were introduced to the objectives of the session.
\nMr. Krishnarajah began the session by providing an in-depth overview of Social Impact Assessment (SIA). He explained that SIA is a systematic process of identifying, predicting, and evaluating the potential social impacts of a proposed project or policy on the affected communities and stakeholders. The main focus of SIA is to ensure that the project’s benefits outweigh any potential negative social consequences. The resource person emphasized the significance of conducting SIA as an integral part of project management. The session encouraged active participation from the audience. Attendees enthusiastically engaged in discussions, seeking clarification on various aspects of SIA and sharing their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in integrating social considerations into project planning. The session concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr. Krishnarajah for his enlightening and thought-provoking insights. Participants expressed their appreciation for the comprehensive understanding gained on the significance of social impact assessment and its role in promoting sustainable and inclusive projects.

As the Project Management Club of The Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya essentially pointed out to organize a workshop through Hybrid mode. Therefore, we organized our workshop series 05 \u201cGuide to the Capstone projects\u201d via physical mode at SH4, Soosairatnam building and zoom platform on 04th April 2023 from 02.00 PM to 04.00 PM.
\nThe guest speaker for this webinar was Dr. Y. Nanthagopan, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies at the University of Vavuniya. This workshop will prominently focus on final-year project management student\u2019s capstone projects and guide them towards the successful completion of their undertaken capstone projects. This workshop completely discussed what a capstone project is and how to work on it. Resource person provided the utmost knowledge about this field and gave ideas for working on capstone projects. This is a hybrid mode workshop; therefore, all academic year project management students were invited to join in this workshop through the Zoom portal as well. Other students also eagerly participated in this workshop through Zoom. He kept all the participants very engaged and enthusiastic therefore participants got plenty of knowledge through this session about Capstone projects. Head of The Department of Project Management Mr. S. Thirugnanasampanthar, Senior Advisor and treasurer of Project management club Mrs. S. Mathivathany also were invited by Project Management Club for enlighten the event.
\nAll the first year, second year, third year Project Management students, assistant lecturers also actively participated to this workshop. During this session, final-year students presented their groups’ capstone project proposals, and the dean guided them based on the topic chosen by the students, and then they had clear ideas about their projects, and other students also gained the most knowledge in this topic.<\/p>\n

The Project Management Club of The Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya proudly presented a workshop series 02 \u201cEFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF FOREIGN FUNDING BY PROFOUND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES OF PORTFOLIO\/ PROGRAM\/ PROJECT, TO ADDRESS THE PRESENT ECONOMIC DOWNFALL OF SRI LANKA\u201d as a new step on 08th September 2022 from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm at BH1 lecture hall.<\/p>\n

Dr.(Eng.) S.S.Sivakumar,Senior Academic in Project Management, PHD, MSc.(WRD),BSc.(Eng.), Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna was invited as the guest speaker for the event. Dean, Faculty of Business Studies of University of Vavuniya Dr. Y. Nanthagopan, Head of The Department of Project Ma nagement Mr. Thirugnanasampanthar, Senior Advisor Mrs. S. Mathivathany also were invited by Project Management Club for enlighten the event. Specially the workshop was conducted for fourth year project management students to provide a wider area of knowledge regarding practical application of portfolio management with project management.

    Rather than engaging with theoretical knowledge of project execution, being corporate with the subjects in practical way through such workshops influence students to think and see over the limited frame.<\/p>\n

    The Project Management Club of the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Vavuniya proudly presented a workshop series 01 \u201cExperience Gained in Formulation and Execution of Foreign Funded Project\u201d for the very first time on 26th April 2022 from 1.30pm to 4.30 pm at SH4 lecture hall.
    \nDr. (Eng.) S.S. Sivakumar, Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna was invited as the Resource Person for the event. Dr. Y. Nanthagopan, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies of the University of Vavuniya, Mr. Thirugnanasampanthar Head, Department of Project Management, Senior Advisor\/ Treasurer Mrs. S. Mathivathany also were invited by Project Management Club for enlighten the event. All the first year, second year and third year Project Management students were actively participated to the workshop.
    \nRather than engaging with theoretical knowledge of project execution, being corporate with the subjects in practical way through such workshops influence students to think and see over the limited frame. Also, inspired participants to further explore it on their own in any project fields. It was a great way to teach hands-on skills as it gives learners an opportunity to try out new methods in project environment. Students requested to conduct further workshop in future to get practical experiences. Over 180 student\u2019s participation, the workshop series 01 was successfully completed.<\/p>\n
