Faculty of Business Studies consists of seven departments, namely, the Department of Business Economics, the Department of Human Resource Management, the Department of Marketing Management, the Department of Project Management, the Department of Finance and Accountancy, the Department of English Language Teaching, and the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship. The faculty offers Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) Honours degree programme, namely, Accounting and Finance, Marketing Management, Business Economics, Human Resource Management, Project Management, and Entrepreneurship.

An Entrepreneurship Club is proposed as a platform for the students who follow the Honours in Entrepreneurship. The major purpose of initiating Entrepreneurship Club is to carry out series of activities that enrich students’ exposure in Entrepreneurship in the real world. The activities planned in the Entrepreneurship Club are fostering active participation, collaboration, and unify the students to further develop their interpersonal, technical, and conceptual skills. The Club caters to the students’ personal and professional paths to construct the basement to achieve the “Fueling Ideas, Igniting Success”.

Strategic intent of the club

The Entrepreneurship Club is initiated with the primary purpose of enhancing the knowledge, competencies and exposure of undergraduate students who follow Honours in Entrepreneurship. This supports the students’ personal and professional career development. The logo is given below, which represents the letters “E”, coloured in Gold, and “C”, coloured in Green.

  • Gold (E): Represents achievement, success, and wealth. It conveys a sense of accomplishment and aspiration toward high goals.
  • Green (C): Signifies growth, success, and new beginnings. It aligns with the idea of startups and continuous development in entrepreneurship.

Activities of the Club

The Entrepreneurship Club focuses on career development with many great opportunities:

Business Pitch Competitions

Members will create and present business ideas to a panel of judges or fellow club members. The best pitch wins. This helps develop presentation skills, creativity, and the ability to communicate a business vision.

Startup Simulation Challenge

Members are divided into teams and tasked with creating a mock startup, from ideation to execution. Each team will design a business plan, marketing strategy, and financial projections. Encourages teamwork, strategic thinking, and practical business planning.

Business Idea Brainstorming Sessions

Members engage in creative brainstorming sessions to generate innovative business ideas. This activity encourages creativity and collaboration, fostering a mindset of innovation.

Hackathon for Entrepreneurs

Organize a hackathon where members are tasked with solving specific entrepreneurial problems, for example, market entry strategies and business automation. This encourages fast-paced, creative problem-solving and collaboration under pressure.

Field visits

Field visits will be organized for students to observe real time Entrepreneurship practices in relevant organizations. It will also allow students to build networks with professionals and enhance industrial relations in the commercial world.

Colloquium

An academic meeting or seminar will be conducted in a regular manner to lead by different lecturers or research students on a different topic at each meeting.

Students Research Forum

Undergraduate Research Forums will be organized intra and inter university levels targeting on final year students to present students’ research.

Organizing and participating competitions

University level quizzes, debates, presentations and essay competitions will be taken place on selected themes.

Counseling programs

Business Counseling programs will be organized with the representation of internal and external trained professionals to help student to navigate difficult situation in business.

Volunteer events

The club will conduct volunteer events including Blood Donation, visits to Community Centers, Off-University Community Clean-Ups, green initiatives.

Seminars and Workshops

Seminars and workshops will be conducted for students to interact with relevant experts to obtain information on best Entrepreneurship practices, get updated on the latest Entrepreneurship trends and techniques and network with people

3.12 Competition on Innovative Business Ideas

Competition on innovative business ideas will be organized to create an opportunity for the students
to present their innovative entrepreneurship ideas and products.

Research Groups

Research Group consists of members from academic staff and many Honours in Entrepreneurship
Management research students, to collaborate with external parties for sharing knowledge or fund.

Sponsorship

The Club will obtain sponsorships from the organizations or public for conducting activities including
exhibitions, students research forum, career fair, competitions and charity works.

Mini Market

A fund generation activity will be conducted through the Mini Market, in which students will create business
products to sell them in the market space arranged within the premises of the University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka.

Income Generation Activities

Income generation activities will be conducted, for example: printing t-shirts, car washing, film festival,
musical as well as drama programs to raise funds for the club’s activities.

Media Promotion

Media Promotion Group that comprises students and staff is proposed to digitally promote the Marketing
Club’s brand through social media. All the club’s events will be digitally displayed and promoted.

Entrepreneurship Club Magazine

Entrepreneurship Club magazine will be published annually.

Celebrating International Days

The Entrepreneurship Club will promote and celebrate remarkable days such as the World Entrepreneurs’ Day
on the 21st of August, World Sustainability Day on 26th October, and World Environment Day on 5th June.

Social Harmony and Active Citizenship Projects

The Entrepreneurship Club will work with the communities to promote its CSR activities through incident-based
projects, national/regional priority projects and annual priorities.

Exhibitions

The Entrepreneurship Club will conduct exhibitions on the topic of creativity, innovation, marketing, and
entrepreneurship.

Run a Mini Library

A mini library will be maintained by the Entrepreneurship Club.

Sports and Cultural Activity Between Clubs

Sports and Cultural activities will also be conducted among the registered students’ clubs in the faculty to
promote harmony among the students.

Membership and Elections

The students who are reading BBM Honours in Entrepreneurship are entitled to obtain membership.
Membership is granted after completion and receipt of a membership application together with a one-time membership fee of Rs. 300.
Membership is valid for the entire studentship at the University.

The Patron will be the Head of the Department. The Senior Treasurer will be nominated by the students and appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.
The President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Editors, and batch representatives of the executive committee will be elected from among the students.

General Meetings are held bi-annually before the commencement of each semester and executive committee meetings are held monthly.

Executive Committee Members and Their Duties

Patron

The position of Patron shall be held by the respective Head of the Department. The responsibilities are as follows:

  • Advise the club members on their activities and improvements
  • Act as the mediator for facility arrangements
  • Motivate the students to be involved in club activities
  • Administrator when dealing with external parties

Senior Treasurer/Advisor

The Senior Treasurer and the Advisor will be appointed from the Senior Academics of the Department. Responsibilities:

  • Advise the members about the club’s functions
  • Monitor the club’s action plan and budget
  • Verify the club purchase requests and receipts
  • Monitor financial transactions and approvals
  • Ensure that the Club maintains accurate account-keeping and records
  • Encourage students for fundraising activities

President

The President will be elected from among the third-year students. Responsibilities:

  • Take decisions based on the Executive Committee’s resolutions
  • Chair the Club’s meetings and assist in identifying annual goals
  • Advocate for the club’s program
  • Maintain discipline at all gatherings and activities
  • Conduct monthly meetings with club officers to monitor activities
  • Report meeting minutes and progress to the Senior Treasurer and Advisor
  • Ensure adherence to university rules and regulations

Vice-President

The Vice-President will be elected from among the third-year students. Responsibilities:

  • Chair meetings in the absence of the President
  • Support the President in carrying out duties
  • Oversee club activities as instructed by the President
  • Act as President in the event of a vacancy until a new election

Secretary

The Secretary will be appointed from among the second-year students. Responsibilities:

  • Implement plans and decisions taken by the Executive Committee
  • Publish club news
  • Maintain club documents
  • Take and distribute meeting minutes
  • Submit a summary of meetings and activities at General Meetings
  • Maintain up-to-date membership lists

Treasurer

The Treasurer will be appointed from among the second-year students. Responsibilities:

  • Prepare the annual budget and get approval from the Senior Treasurer
  • Manage all financial transactions and approvals
  • Maintain accurate financial records
  • Submit bi-annual and final financial reports

Editor and Co-Editor

The Editor and Co-Editor will be appointed from among the fourth-year students. Responsibilities:

  • Collect and publish articles and newsletters
  • Work under the guidance of the Patron and Senior Treasurer

Members (3 Members)

Three members will represent each batch. Responsibilities:

  • Attend Executive Committee meetings
  • Participate in planning activities
  • Communicate plans and activities to batchmates

Electing Office Bearers

The faculty shall call for nominations for all posts. If more than one nomination is received for a position,
the Assistant Registrar (AR) shall conduct an election. At least two female students must be considered.
New officers assume their duties on the first day of the academic year.

Vacant Positions

In case of a vacancy, the Secretary shall inform the AR, and a special election will be held.

Sources of Funding

The Club is permitted to collect funds from the following sources with prior approval from the Vice-Chancellor:

Membership Fee

One-time membership fee of Rs. 300.

Collecting Money from Members

Funds can be collected for specific events and activities with approval.

Sponsorship

Sponsorships can be obtained for exhibitions, fairs, and charity works with approval.

Fundraising Activities

Events inside and outside the University can be conducted with approval.

Procurement of Goods and Services

Goods and services up to Rs. 25,000 can be procured with Senior Treasurer approval; larger amounts must follow university procedures.
